Whenever a panda cub is born, the world celebrates. But why don't we do the same for other endangered species? Part of it is due to the popularity of pandas, but there is another reason: panda cubs are incredibly rare. Since female pandas can only be impregnated for a very short period of time each year, and individuals are raised in isolation to avoid fighting, most pandas lose the urge to mate. This is one of the reasons why, although the panda population is around 1600, each new panda is still such a big deal.
